Smartvatten modernizes water efficiency solutions with Codento

Smartvatten is the leading European SaaS platform for full-cycle water intelligence, serving both real estate portfolios and utilities. Smartvatten enables sustainable water use through smart monitoring, data analytics, and optimization. Their solutions help customers save water, reduce emissions, and improve the sustainability of the properties. To support growth and profitability through better performance management, operational efficiency, and future AI ambitions, Smartvatten needed a single, trusted data foundation and a unified way to track financial, operational, and commercial performance.
Challenge
Smartvatten operated with reporting processes distributed across spreadsheets, teams, and systems. Financial and operational metrics required significant manual effort and highlighted the need for stronger data structure, clearer visibility, and improved scalability, particularly during periods of rapid growth and acquisitions.
Partnership with Codento
In collaboration with Codento, Smartvatten launched its Data & Analytics project in April 2025. The joint team began by assessing data availability and creating a phased plan to first ensure reliable, well‑structured data in BigQuery. Codento supported Smartvatten with:
- Implementation of a modern data warehouse in Google BigQuery
- Data modelling and transformation pipelines, ensuring consistent definitions, logic, and governance
- Knowledge transfer enabling Smartvatten’s internal team to continue development and maintenance independently
- A data governance and KPI definition framework, securing long‑term transparency, alignment, and trust
Results
Eight months after project launch, Smartvatten had introduced the first deliverables in an automated, reconciled financial and KPI reporting environment (Qlik Cloud) serving as the company’s single source of truth. First financial and commercial metrics were modelled in BigQuery with consistent definitions, accessible to the entire organization via BI dashboards. After additional two months, many operational KPIs were added to BigQuery. Key outcomes include:
- One source of truth: Fully reconciled financial and operational data
- Real‑time Business Intelligence visibility into P&L, ARR, churn, and sales performance
- Automated data flows, significantly reducing manual effort and errors
- Consistent KPI definitions, replacing fragmented interpretations and internal debates
- Increased trust among various stakeholders
- Scalable architecture that supports future expansion and acquisitions
- AI readiness, enabling future use of unstructured data and advanced analytics such as forecasting, anomaly detection, and automated insights
