What was the challenge?
One of the visionary opportunities expected from 5G mobile networks has been the rise of edge computing, enabling novel applications such as cost-efficient solutions for real-time quality assurance, warehouse automation, or self-driving vehicles.
Telia is a 170-year-old pioneer of digitalizing societies. The company was seeking new business areas where it could monetize its investments in 5G and the opportunity to realize the benefits of edge computing technology.
Our solution
A couple of years ago, Telia was looking for a competent partner to help them validate the different mobile edge computing, enforcing cloud-native application development and mobile network collaboration. Codento’s team convinced Telia with their deep technology expertise and broad experience in the telecom sector and in industrial verticals that hold most of the identified use cases for low-latency edge computing.
The aim was to build a multitenant edge computing platform offering cost-effective computing capacity through shared resources that software solution providers could access flexibly but securely. “At that point, it became clear that Telia was ahead of their time. The cloud platforms and their Kubernetes container technologies were not mature enough to fulfill the customer needs, yet.” remembers Markku Tuomala, Chief Technology Officer at Codento, and continues: “After careful evaluation, we concluded that Google Cloud Platform offered the most promising tools for the roadmap that we had in mind.”
Over two years now, Telia’s and Codento’s teams have worked side-by-side to develop a solution that would be one-of-a-kind worldwide. In the fall of 2023, Google announced the Google Kubernetes Engine for Enterprise, which solved the challenges of resource isolation, scalability, unified management, and enhanced security. With Google Kubernetes Engine for Enterprise, it became possible for Codento to help build the multitenant Edge platform that Telia had envisioned.
Why Codento?
Codento was chosen as Telia’s partner for three reasons: first, Codento had a clear vision of Edge computing platforms in the operator setting, which it shared with Telia. Second, Codento’s team has deep vertical knowledge of telecoms and industrial manufacturing sectors. Third, Codento possesses an extensive technical understanding of cloud platforms and technologies, and in particular, its Google Cloud expertise is cutting-edge across the Nordics.
What were the results?
Telia and Codento have developed a trailblazer platform that is tightly integrated into the 5G – or, in the future, 6G – mobile network. This platform allows Telia to offer its customers an exceptional service where different application developers can flexibly and cost-efficiently yet securely build new applications and use the shared edge computing resources on Google Cloud. The first public end-customer case, a video analytics pilot with logistics operator Finferries, was published in September 2024.
In the customer’s own words
“We are extremely proud of the achievement we have made together with Codento. For the first time, the teams have combined cloud-native applications and mobile network technology to create an easy-to-access, multi-tenant, low-latency edge computing solution for software providers. Our new innovation platform, Sirius, offers a secure, scalable environment where mobile network SaaS capabilities and applications can be agilely published and used without operational delay.“
